Premiere business consultant and team optimization expert, Dr. Kimberly Janson shares wisdom about leadership development and emotional intelligence

Professionals across the globe are hard at work producing, manufacturing, marketing, distributing, and selling products and services. Armed with the know-how to get the job done while turning a profit, they are outstanding at what they do best. However, hidden in the day-to-day of company-wide interactions, many organizations have areas in which improvements in efficiencies can and should be made. With so much to do in keeping all eyes on the ball, it is difficult for leaders to zero in on processes that could be working against them. Dr. Kimberly Janson, CEO, and President of Janson Associates provides solutions for forward-thinking organizations that want to enhance valuable assets, such as human resources and corporate culture.

Janson Associates is well-known for its broad range of services, including assistance with merger and acquisition, cultural transformation, strategic planning, executive counseling, team optimization, and organizational development. Before founding Janson Associates, Dr. Janson’s professional history included executive-level positions with H. J. Heinz, Bank of America, Hasbro, and Bank of Boston. She has worked in over 40 countries and nearly every state within the United States, accumulating over 25 years of experience building custom executive and leadership development programs. She is a member of Forbes Coaching Council and served as a Harvard Business School facilitator and executive coach.

Janson Associates’ website includes an impressive client list, including Carnival, Zara, Johns Hopkins University, and many more prestigious companies. “My role in Janson Associates allows me to create positive change for many people in organizations,” says Dr. Janson. “I work to have them benefit from my experience working with major organizations around the globe. I have had the pleasure of touching over 300 companies so I see myself as a good match-making friend to bring people and ideas together to help them be better.”

With Janson Associates’ support, companies can take a more active role in leadership development. Leadership and culture creation is central to successful team-building. Dr. Janson is an expert in assisting organizations in developing effective high-performance teams. Many factors contribute to ineffective leadership, including lack of experience, skills, and emotional intelligence. “There are many variations on the definition of emotional intelligence (EI), it primarily consists of self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy, and trust,” says Dr. Janson. Leaders with emotional intelligence handle management responsibilities professionally and rationally, promote positive employee engagement, and a healthy work environment. People are being hired because of their intelligence and fired because of their lack of emotional intelligence, so helping them raise their acumen in this area has a direct tie to business success.

Dr. Janson has published a book, Demystifying Talent Management: Unleash People’s Potential to Deliver Superior Results. According to Amazon, it will “guide readers to a deeper understanding of the mechanics of talent management and development success so that all the stakeholders can come together in a win-win-win-win scenario.” Her next book, Determining Leadership Potential: Powerful Insights to Winning at the Talent Game, is now available for pre-sale. That book was co-authored with Dr. Melody Rawlings of Northcentral University and Dani Monroe, a diversity guru, and CEO of Center Focus International. She’s working on her next book already!

For Dr. Janson, company culture is at the foundation of success for organizations. In order to be productive and happy with their work, employees need to feel they are contributing to something larger than themselves. Think of culture this way. Our behaviors, as individuals, are based on our beliefs. A shared set of beliefs creates culture. The trick is to be intentional about those beliefs, communicate about them, and hold people accountable for them to create the culture you desire.  In order to thrive, the culture of leadership needs to be purposeful, consistent, and positive in the way they show up for an organization. The way leaders set the tone is sometimes referred to as “tone from the top.” They need to be intentional about the messages they are sending, verbally and non-verbally.

Effective teams with strong leadership have the ability to pivot quickly and cohesively in response to opportunities and challenges. Ideally, armed with good communication, team members benefit from understanding company mission and goals, and collaboratively develop viable solutions to unexpected and stressful situations that arise.

Another core strength that Dr. Janson brings to her clients is her highly skilled ability to assist organizations with talent recruitment and developing leaders. She is intuitive in her ability to spot high learning agility in prospective leaders, an essential quality for Dr. Janson. “This world doesn’t stay the same for a second,” she says. “We need to have a real thirst for and commitment to reinventing ourselves.” Another critical factor she looks for is motivation, of which she says, “Companies must hire people with a big engine!”

On every level, it seems Dr. Janson is investing 100% of her passion and talent into Janson Associates. A few fun facts about her are that she is an equestrian at heart and loves everything equine-related. Her family owns a high-end horse farm, where they breed Grand Prix level show jumpers. Dr. Janson rides, trains horses, and when her children were young, she provided them with an Olympic trainer. Now an adult, her son has gone all-in on a new business, a horse farm called Legacy Farms aided by help from her husband, Mike, and daughter Hannah, who is also a marketing guru. With this background, it makes sense that Dr. Janson is working on another book, Leadership Lessons Through Horses. Interestingly, she draws amazing parallels between coaching horses and people. This book is sure to offer excellent advice for horse-lovers and business leaders.
