The 10 Best HOKA Shoes for Walking and Running, According to a Fitness-Obsessed Editor

Clifton 10

Pros

  • APMA Seal of Acceptance
  • Noticeably plush midsole cushioning to absorb impact
  • Neutral support is ideal for most runners and walkers
  • Available in regular, wide, and extra-wide sizes

Cons

  • Heavier than similar running shoe styles

When you want a shoe that works for walking, running, workout classes, travel days—and legit everything in between—the Clifton 10 is your girl. Our editors love this shoe for its noticeably soft footbed that offers plush, neutral cushioning through the heel and forefoot.

Not only is the chunky exterior and subtle rocker shape very on-trend, it also helps propel you forward with every stride. It’s worth noting that this versatile shoe has earned the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) Seal of Acceptance, which means it’s been independently reviewed by a group of podiatrists to ensure it promotes foot health. I’d also be remiss not to mention my personal favorite feature: the plush upper that hugs your ankle for blister-free foot stability and plenty of airflow.

One thing worth noting? The Clifton 10 might feel a little heavy to some runners, weighing in at 8.8 ounces. However, if you prefer walking or short runs to long distance efforts, you likely won’t notice the difference.

  • Sizes: U.S. 5 to 12 (wide and extra-wide widths available)
  • Weight: 8.8 oz
  • Heel drop: 8 mm

Glowing customer review: These are actually some of the most comfortable pair of shoes I have ever worn! Immediately upon putting them on for the first time. I am thinking about ordering a second pair.

Mach 6

Pros

  • Responsive and bouncy midsole
  • Feels less chunky than other HOKA styles
  • Breathable upper to avoid overheating

Cons

  • Some reviewers note that the Mach 6 runs smaller than previous iterations

If you’re an avid runner looking for a go-to daily trainer, reach for the Mach 6. This lightweight and springy style is perfect for logging miles on the road, treadmill, or track thanks to the responsive midsole that prioritizes ample energy return in every step.

While the cushion technically leans more low-profile than the Clifton, this also means that it feels a lot more natural, stable, and lightweight—which is music to my ears. Plus, the jacquard upper feels soft and breathable compared to other HOKA styles. If you’ve been a fan of this shoe for a while like me, just note that the Mach 6 runs slightly smaller than past versions, according to reviewers.

  • Sizes: U.S. 5 to 11 (wide widths available)
  • Weight: 6.7 oz
  • Heel drop: 5 mm

Glowing customer review: I thought I loved the Clifton 9, but these are, believe it or not, even better…They have a bit of a bounce midsole that is really nice and makes you wanna gooo!… These make running fun.

Bondi 9

Pros

  • One of HOKA’s plushest sneaker styles
  • Chunkier sole provides added softness and impact-absorption
  • APMA Seal of Acceptance

Cons

  • Some shoppers claim that the toe box is too narrow

Our editors are no strangers to a hot girl walk—many of us live in New York City, after all. The Bondi 9 tops our list for walking thanks to its extra-chunky construction that features layers of sink-in softness underfoot.

The added 2 millimeters in stack height mean this sneaker offers even more cushioning than the best-selling Cliftons, giving your feet and joints more support if you’re standing for long periods of time. And I’d be lying if I said the chic colorways (like this dreamy lavender hue!) didn’t add to the Bondi’s appeal, since you could totally style them with jeans, athleisure, or even a simple dress. Keep in mind that some shoppers found the toe box to be slightly narrow on this sneaker—so it might be worth trying out a wider width if you’re worried about your toes feeling cramped.

  • Sizes: U.S. 4 to 12 (wide and extra-wide widths available)
  • Weight: 9.3 oz
  • Heel drop: 5 mm

Glowing customer review: I’m on my feet 9 plus hours a day, and I walk over 12 miles a day [so] I’ve worn out so many pairs of tennis shoes and I’m always looking for a better shoe…I’ve found them!! It feels as if am walking on air, at the end of my day, my feet and legs aren’t hurting, my back doesn’t feel the normal fatigue.

Arahi 8

Pros

  • Enhanced H-frame to correct over-pronation
  • Footframe cradles your heel for added stability
  • Plush midsole cushioning that’s great for walking and running

Cons

  • Less suitable for runners or walkers with a neutral stride

If you tend to over-pronate when you walk (AKA, your ankles roll inwards as you step), you’ll want to look for a stability shoe to help correct your gait. And when it comes to HOKA’s stability lineup, the Arahi is my favorite pick.

According to Margerum, this shoe has many of the same features as the Clifton 10—including the same breathable mesh upper and soft foam underfoot—but with a special footframe that cradles your heel for extra stability in every step and provides added support for over-pronators.

Just note that if you don’t have problems over-pronating, these sneakers may feel jarring to your stride.

  • Sizes: U.S. 5 to 12 (wide and extra-wide sizes available)
  • Weight: 7.7 oz
  • Heel drop: 8 mm

Glowing customer review: These seem to be exactly what my feet needed! I’m a nurse in a busy pediatric office and was having arch and really terrible heel pain…So far I’ve left work with no foot pain and feeling like I could keep going many more steps. The upper material is very soft but completely supports my whole foot.

Skyward X

Pros

  • Extra cushion for maximum impact absorption
  • Built-in carbon fiber plate helps propel your stride
  • Foot frame in the heel and midfoot keeps your foot secure

Cons

  • Some shoppers may dislike how chunky they are
  • Expensive

Wanna feel like you’re walking on literal clouds? Meet the Skyward X, one of HOKA’s most-cushioned sneaks. The extra stack height features even more foam to help absorb impact, while features like the rocker shape and carbon plated midsole assist with transitioning your foot from heel strike to toe-off while maintaining your pace.

  • Sizes: U.S. 5 to 12
  • Weight: 9.2 oz
  • Heel drop: 5 mm

Glowing customer review: After my knee operation, it has been very difficult for me to run because of the impact that occurs while running, until I tried this model…The most remarkable benefits I have felt is that my knee is more comfortable, I can keep my pace in my races, I don’t get tired, I feel more stable, comfortable, padded and protective. Even if they are more expensive, it is worth running every kilometer with them.

Challenger 8

Pros

  • APMA Seal of Acceptance
  • Durable outsole and multidirectional lugs for traction
  • Plush upper for comfort

Cons

  • Some shoppers say the toe box is too narrow

Hit the trails without sacrificing style, courtesy of these high-traction kicks. The Challenger 8 has a plush upper for added comfort, while its midsole foam cushioning helps prevent you from feeling every rock and twig in your path. Most importantly, these trail-ready sneakers have a rugged outsole (which makes them more durable against wear and tear) and multidirectional lugs for plenty of grip. And yeah, it’s also an APMA Seal of Acceptance-holder, so you know it’s good for hiking and trail-running alike.

  • Sizes: U.S. 5 to 12 (wide sizes available)
  • Weight: 8.7 oz
  • Heel drop: 8 mm

Glowing customer review: I run/walk on rocky roads and uneven terrain daily…so my feet feel everything. Finding running shoes that can absorb the shock of stepping on stones and the many other things I run across is extremely difficult. I can say with confidence HOKA is a game changer I’m already looking for my second pair.

Clifton One9

Pros

  • Same cushioning and silhouette as Clifton 10
  • Retro-inspired mesh-and-film upper
  • Available in 8 different colors

Cons

  • Upper is less suitable for running

Given the popularity of its chunky Clifton sneaker, HOKA started creating style-friendly versions of the shoe to help you stay up on the latest trends—without sacrificing comfort. The Clifton One9 is our best street syle HOKA sneaker pick for its classic chunky outsole that’s paired with an open-hole mesh and film upper that looks delightfully old-school. It comes in eight different colors to mix and match with your wardrobe, ranging from this soothing purple hue to a striking black and electric green pick.

  • Sizes: U.S. 5 to 15
  • Weight: N/A
  • Heel drop: N/A

Glowing customer review: These sneakers are just the right combination of cushy and supportive. Super comfortable and good looking enough to wear to meetings at the office.

Transport

Pros

  • Travel-friendly slip-on design
  • Water- and abrasion-resistant exterior
  • APMA Seal of Acceptance

Cons

  • Not as breathable as other styles

The Transport has been dubbed “commuter-friendly” because they’ll get you to the office without you regretting your shoe choice first thing in the morning. Though they’re designed for your daily tos and fros, they’re durable and comfy enough to wear for long days. The water- and abrasion-resistant exterior makes it suited to airport travel, hikes, sightseeing, and everything in between—with a slip-on design to boot.

  • Sizes: U.S. 5 to 11
  • Weight: 11.20 oz
  • Heel drop: 5 mm

Glowing customer review: “Amazing shoes! So comfortable and these specifically are stylish for a run or just out and about. Also, LOVE the fact that these are slip-ons!”

Mach X 3

Credit: courtesy of Samantha Jones

Pros

  • Carbon plate creates a spring-like effect as you step
  • Pronounced rocker shape helps propel you forward
  • Soles are still noticeably soft and comfortable

Cons

  • Rocker shape may take some getting used to
  • Less suitable for easy, everyday runs

As a former 800-meter runner, I looove a sneaker that helps me run fast–and my favorite thing about the Mach X 3 is how well it balances propulsion with support. This carbon-plated shoe is bouncy and lightweight with a noticeable rocker shape, meaning it’ll naturally propel you forward with every step, saving your legs from excess fatigue. It’s not lacking cushion, either; the soles offer distinct sink-in softness for ample impact absorption. I like this shoe for tempo runs and speed work, but it’s also a great pick for longer efforts, too. However, since it has a carbon plate, the Mach X 3 is less suited for slow, easy miles than other HOKA styles.

  • Sizes: U.S. 5 to 11 (wide sizes available)
  • Weight: 8.0 oz
  • Heel drop: 5 mm

I got the chance to test the Mach X 3 ahead of its official launch. At the time of publishing, this sneaker *quite* available yet, but we expect it to drop sometime this fall.

Rocket X 3

Pros

  • Carbon plate helps propel you forward while remaining lightweight
  • Active foot frame provides extra stability
  • Breathable knit upper

Cons

  • Not suited for easy, everyday runs

Training for your first marathon or half marathon? One of the most important purchases you’ll wanna make is your race-day shoes (and don’t forget to take them on a few trial runs before the big day, either!). After wear-testing the Rocket X 3 over the last month, it has quickly become one of my new favorite “super shoes.” That’s because its updated carbon-plate soles have extra support through the rear- to mid-foot, keeping excess movement in check while helping you run more efficiently (sign me up!).

I’m also a fan of the double-layered midsole for better rebound while still feeling cushy. Just keep in mind that this shoe is specifically designed for race days and hard efforts, so it’s not the best pick for shoppers looking for an everyday running shoe.

  • Sizes: U.S. 6 to 15
  • Weight: 8.0 oz
  • Heel drop: 7 mm

Glowing customer review: These shoes give me the extra spring I need to run fast. I have been cutting seconds off my fastest mile pace and I feel that the shoes are very stable.

What makes HOKA shoes different from other walking and running shoes?

line

HOKA shoes are known for their ultra-plush midsoles, chunky silhouettes, and bouncy rocker shapes that help propel you forward—not to mention the brand’s wide range of unique styles and colors. These kicks tend to find a good balance between maximum cushion and a bouncy stride, making them optimal for walking and running.

In fact, most podiatrists recommend the brand for folks suffering from foot conditions and runners who want to protect their feet. The American Podiatric Medical Association has also given several HOKA shoes an APMA Seal of Acceptance for their efficiency in protecting foot health.

How to choose the best HOKA shoe for you!

line

Consider why you’re buying.

HOKA sneakers are having a moment right now, and as a running-obsessed editor, I totally get it. The silhouettes are cute and super functional for a variety of needs, whether you’re an avid walker or training for something as ambitious as a marathon. But speaking of, remember that all HOKAs are designed for a specific purpose. It’s why each pair belongs to a certain category, from “everyday wear” to “running” and “terrain.”

Keep cushioning in mind.

While chunky styles are super in style right now, factors like personal preference or susceptibility to injury might dictate just *how* cushioned you want your kicks to be. If you’re walking or running long, relaxed miles, you’ll probably want to amp up the support to help minimize impact on your joints. If you prefer short and sweet runs, opt for a bouncy shoe that’s a little more lightweight. And if you’re getting ready for race day, try a carbon plated sneaker for even more speed.

Focus on the material.

So, ~footwear tech~ is an entire thing, and HOKA puts it to great use, especially in the variety of materials the brand uses. Some shoes are constructed with breathable mesh that’ll help prevent you from overheating as you work out, while others have water-resistant leather that keep your feet dry when you’re on the go.

The outsole is also an important factor; certain soles are made extra sturdy and tractioned for rocky terrains, while others are more plush for max comfort.

Pick the support you need.

The main goal behind a good walking or running shoe is the support, but the levels of comfort can be subjective. Think through what type of foot you have: Do you over-pronate and require extra ankle support to help correct it? Shop for a stability shoe like the Arahi. Do you need extra energy return to take the pressure off your legs? Consider a carbon-plated shoe like the Skyward X or the Mach X for extra bounce.

Try it out!

Also, don’t be afraid to do a couple of test walks! The best way to know if a shoe fits is by taking it out for one of your regular activities. And if it doesn’t, you have 30 days to return your shoes for a full refund, per HOKA’s return policy.
