Fall is one of the most exciting times to upgrade your wardrobe, since that back-to-school feeling is baked into our DNA. When autumn rolls around, we’re jonesing for newness in a way that’s practically Pavlovian.
The key differences between wiser, older, right-now you and that kid who just wanted to wear whatever her friend group was rocking? Number one: You’re the boss in charge, so it’s all about what you’re drawn to (not the look what’s-their-name was buying). And number two: how much savvier you’ve gotten in terms of where you can do your shopping.
In particular, scoring something pre-loved has all kinds of appeal now, from the eco-friendly circularity factor to how you can snag some major deals. And when you’re shopping vintage, there’s one place everyone knows to check first: Depop, and as one of the only resale platforms with no selling fees, it’s easy to buy and sell pre-loved items.
This is the curated online resale platform, where you know you’re going to find something totally unique. Psst: Cosmo’s second “Shop Drop”—themed to back-to-school and fall trends—launches 8/26; shop it here. Plus, if you have a specific shopping wish list (like, maybe one based on the season’s buzziest straight-from-the-runway trends), you can feel totally confident that you’ll walk away with a full cart and a super swaggy updated closet.
Here are some of the key trends we’re keeping our eye on right now, as well as some finds from different Depop shops that totally fit the bill. Don’t sleep on them, though—we might just snag ’em first ourselves!
Mixed prints
Why pick one dot or spot or stripe if you can have them all, together? This autumn has a major go-bold-or-go-home thing happening, which is super fun if you’re an avowed maximalist (or just one in training).
There are no rules, or any sort of right or wrong here. See what you like, mix and mash it all together, and don’t think twice. We’re not saying to wear all of the below together…or maybe we are?
Tall black boots
A little bit witchy-glam, a little bit vampy: Tall, black, pointed-toe boots are the shoe your closet needs this fall. It’s that rare and wonderful accessory that can feel both costumey and totally, totally everyday—all comes down to how you wear ’em.
The way to turn them into a serious statement shoe is paired with a teeny, tiny mini so the boot is, bam, on full display. On the other hand, you could easily wear a knee-high pair under a wide-leg or bootcut jean. It’s a bit less dramz and, bonus, gives you some extra warmth on a cold day.
Faux Fur
Once the weather starts getting a little chilly, there’s nothing like being extra-cozy. Style-wise, you can do sweaters and scarves and blankets, but the glam answer is fur. (Goes without saying, we’re only talking faux or vintage.)
The thing that’s so fascinatingly fashion about the fuzz is how it speaks to every part of the spectrum. You can be boho-cool or uptown-chic: No matter which tribe feels more like you (or more like your alter ego), there’s a furry option to wear.
Cropped leather jackets
A leather jacket is, obvs, the unofficial uniform of the baddie club. To that point, it’s never exactly “out,” but this fall we’re clocking a major resurgence. And while there’s a sea of different shapes and lengths out there, the silhouette we’re on the hunt for is cropped.
Beyond that, do you, boo. It can be vegan or real, black or literally any other color. No matter what, it’s going to be a key hero in your closet. Trust us: There’s actually nothing it won’t look good with.
Wedges
Fancy a bit of height with your fall ‘fit? Wedges are way easier (and comfier) than most heels, and they give you the same boost. They’re maybe sorta traditionally more of a spring and summer style, but we love (love) seeing someone super stylish wear an open-toe pair with tights or cozy socks.
Any height works, too. Go sky-high if that’s your thing, or stay itty-bitty. A wedge is a wedge is a wedge, no matter how many inches.
