Ten years ago, Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, and Josh Hutcherson were pop culture royalty, as The Hunger Games book trilogy and film series dominated the entertainment space. It’s been a lonely decade without our favorite dystopian residents, but this year, the world of Panem has reemerged in the form of a new movie, a prequel to The Hunger Games we know and love. The newest film in the franchise, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, comes from the 2020 novel by Suzanne Collins, bringing us back 64 years before the events of the original series.
The film stars Rachel Zegler, Tom Blyth, Peter Dinklage, Hunter Schafer, Josh Andrés Rivera, and Viola Davis and hits theaters on November 17.
What Is The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes About?
The film follows a young President Snow before he was President, and before he was evil. We see the world of Panem through the 18-year-old’s eyes, following the fall of society and spark of young love through his relationship with a tribute whom he is tasked with mentoring in the games’ 10th year. A pillar of the Hunger Games lore is a leading lady causing a stir at a reaping ceremony, and where Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss Everdeen did so by volunteering as tribute in place of her sister, our Songbirds and Snakes heroine shakes things up by singing a song mid-ceremony. Hence, the songbird of it all.
Where Can I Watch It?
Right now, the film is playing exclusively in theaters. We understand that to some, this is the worst news imaginable. What could be worse than a movie theater and over-salted popcorn? If this is you, then think of this as a nostalgic experience. We all gathered together in dark theaters to watch the first iteration of this iconic story, and this winter, we will do the same.
As for the film’s streaming fate, a date has not officially been set, but here’s what we do know. The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is distributed by Lionsgate, which has an exclusive streaming deal with Universal. If this insider baseball means absolutely nothing to you, allow us to illuminate. The film will stream, whenever it streams, on Starz and eventually Peacock.
Where Can I Catch Up On The Hunger Games Lore?
If you’re too stubborn to venture to a local theater, then you can spend the next few months catching up with the lore. All four of the movies in the Hunger Games franchise are currently streaming on Peacock, so stream on and may the odds be ever in your favor.
