The grindhouse indie flick of the season is here, and it’s queer. From writer-director Rose Glass comes Love Lies Bleeding, a romantic thriller starring Kristen Stewart and The Mandalorian’s Katy O’Brian, alongside a supporting cast featuring Jena Malone, Ed Harris, Anna Baryshnikov, and Dave Franco. The film takes place in the ’80s and follows the love story between Lou, a shy gym manager and Jackie, a bodybuilder. It starts off sweet and ends stressful, as the lovesick pair’s pilgrimage to a Las Vegas bodybuilding competition is driven off the rails by Lou’s family ties to a criminal underworld.

Love Lies Bleeding marks the buzzy return of the actress of a generation, Kristen Stewart, in what might be her edgiest project yet (and that’s saying something). A versatile talent, audiences have seen the actress follow up her Twilight Saga fame with such films as Personal Shopper, Seberg, Charlie’s Angels, and Happiest Season. The reception for this film, however, has so far been positive, landing as her second-highest rated movie on Rotten Tomatoes right behind Pablo Larraín’s 2021 Princess Diana epic, Spencer. Did you think we would say Twilight? According to the critics and early audiences, Love Lies Bleeding is better than Twilight. Talk about a calling card.

The other name behind Love Lies Bleeding, Rose Glass, is not a new one to the A24 fandom. The English filmmaker made a huge splash in 2019 with her debut film Saint Maud, which was also released under A24’s purview. Glass has a taste for the vexing, her first film being a psychological horror, and her latest, a crime thriller. Expect nothing sweet from Rose Glass. Expect no clean edges. Expect blood.

How Can I Watch Love Lies Bleeding?

Love Lies Bleeding lands in theaters on March 8. There’s no word yet on a streaming date, but given that this is an A24 picture, it will eventually make its way onto HBO Max. At the end of 2023, A24 and HBO inked a deal, promising the production company’s entire library, both current and upcoming, to HBO, Max, and Cinemax.

Current A24 titles available to stream include Priscilla, The Whale, and Dicks: The Musical. In addition to Love Lies Bleeding, Max account holders can expect to see such upcoming films as Alex Garland’s Civil War, Dream Scenario, and The Iron Claw on their queue later this year.

Speaking of The Iron Claw, when paired with Love Lies Bleeding, the two new films create a collection of A24 films that explore the business of body—be that the performance of professional wrestling, to the sacrifice of professional bodybuilding. The former film will make you sob, the latter will make you sweat. Either way, we’re sitting.
