The Mosaic Tile museum in Tajimi, Gifu by architect Terunobu Fujimori, who believes that earth is the most fundamental material for structure stands out in its shape and texture in the industrialized city. The façade of the museum is an ode to earth, and is embedded with all sorts of tiles. Roof tiles are used on the side, and the contours are defined by pine trees.

Tajimi in Gifu is known for its ceramics and tiles and Terunobu Fujimori is an international acclaimed architect. While tiles are disappearing in Japanese houses, old townhouses and houses in the countryside still have bathrooms and kitchens, that are filled with colourful and uniquely designed tiles.

Everyday tile products, such as this sink, was once a common view in many Japanese homes.

The museum showcases different tiles and forms that were collected over the years by volunteers, who started seeing a decline in tiles. Children and adults can also enjoy workshops and learn about the history of the unique tiles of Tajimi.
