Once mid-August hits every year, fashion lovers feel a subtle change in the air—hardly noticeable, but recognizable nonetheless. Suddenly, putting on shorts just doesn’t feel quite as enticing, and every time a closet is opened, their eye lingers a little longer on the blazer that hasn’t seen wear in a few months. We know what’s happening: Fall fashion is suddenly rumbling under the surface, patiently waiting for a sub-70 day to make its glorious debut for the year.

Sure, summer is blissful in its own right, but we’d be hard-pressed to find someone that doesn’t welcome the beautiful, crisp days of autumn with open arms. No matter how much you love the warmer months, the fall temperature drop allowing you to wrap yourself in a sweater and play with layers after months of bare-minimum dressing is a welcome reprieve. Centered around shape-enhancing silhouettes, statement-making details, and luxe upgrades fit for daily wear, this season’s trends are revving up to make dressing fun again.

This fall’s trends are waiting for no one, and it’s time to adjust our priorities accordingly. From shades of green to the revival of leopard print and beyond, these are the ones set to dominate fall 2024.

At the heels of Charli XCX’s brat summer, we might be bidding adieu to the florescent shade of lime that became synonymous with summer 2024, but we won’t be saying goodbye to green in its entirety as we enter the cooler months. Olive green is set to be fall 2024’s dominant color—and the beauty of it lies within its ability to behave as a neutral. Rather than the sea of blacks, browns, and greys that typically come with fall, expect olive green to be fighting for your most-worn shade of the season.

Between Beyoncé’s “Texas Hold ‘Em” being on repeat throughout the entirety of 2024 and the coastal cowgirl aesthetic’s virality in back in 2023, fashion is no stranger to cowboy-inspired trends as of late. But hold your horses: Cowboy boots and hats aren’t the only Western-inspired pieces that deserve your attention. If you glanced around at Fall/ Winter ’24 presentation’s attendees, you’d have noticed that they had a major detail in common with the models on the runway: a whole lot of fringe. It’s a detail that’s gone largely unnoticed by the Western movement, but its laid-back, movement-prone appeal gained momentum earlier this year that will continue through the fall months.

Forget your trusty stack of necklaces—this season, statement-making necklines are the most coveted accessory. Details that drew the eye up took the center stage in a slew of forms at Fall/ Winter ’24 presentations. Draping cowl necks took form at Tod’s to give a sculptural effect to leather tops, while minimal turtlenecks at Bottega Veneta reminded us that it’s due time to consider layering a turtleneck under every outfit post-Labor Day. When in doubt, you can take a page from Dior’s playbook and have a chunky, oversized turtleneck count as taking part in the trend.

Sure, some of us would be willing to fight to the death in an argument that “leopard never went anywhere!”—but the fact of the matter is that over the past few years, it did take a brief pause. Some of the impossibly chic—ahem, looking at you, Jenna Lyons—have always counted it as a neutral, but if you’re looking for the green light to do so yourself, now is the time. Versace showed a series of cherry red, leopard-embellished frocks at their F/W ’24 presentation; Dior gave its audience a literal interpretation of head-to-toe with a leopard set topped off with a matching hat. Whether you’re jumping for joy at the return of the print or shaking your fist at the sky at the thought of seeing it in your closet again, leopard is undoubtedly, inarguably back.

Leather is, inarguably, a fall mainstay; but after seasons of worn-in, distressed-looking leather taking center stage, this season is taking a smoother approach to the staple. Marni showed a smooth leather maxi dress that gave an almost wet-looking appearance as it went down the runway, while Versace’s polished, glassy leather trench coat emulated a more refined take on leather that feels completely elevated.

Mob wife aesthetic lovers, rejoice. Fall 2024’s runways included parades of one common texture: lots and lots of fur. From Erdem’s near floor-sweeping, colorful fur coats to a casual, quarter-zip fur pullover at Loewe, it’s clear that this fall’s most coveted outwear includes a healthy dose of shag. It also goes without saying that the only chic way to wear fur is if it’s faux.

If you thought that the red obsession had ran its course over the past 12 months, think again. Fall/ Winter ’24 presentations featured many variations of the hue: Jil Sander had a cinched-waist, cherry red pantsuit on display, while Bottega Veneta’s Matthieu Blazy showed a draped leather trench in a roasted tomato shade. While this season will continue to feature the bright pops of cherry red we’ve become all too familiar with this year, we’ll also be seeing more emphasis on its more sultry, fall-ready sister: a deep, moody burgundy.
