In a truly “Ballad of a Homeschooled Girl” move, Olivia Rodrigo revealed that she made a Finsta (aka a burner account) after accidentally following her ex on Instagram. Celebs… they’re just like us!
Liv appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Thursday, December 7 to promote her upcoming stint as Saturday Night Live‘s musical guest. Jimmy pointed out that she doesn’t follow anyone on Instagram and asked if there was a specific reason she keeps her feed empty. “Oh shit,” she replied. “I try to follow zero people because it helps me be off of my phone—you know, off of social media.”
She then opened up about the mishap, saying, “I had this very embarrassing encounter once where I was stalking my ex as one does. Sue me, sorry. And I accidentally followed him ’cause I was stalking him.”
“I was just following one person, so it was super obvious that I was following him,” the Grammy winner explained. “And my friend ran into my room and was like, ‘Oh my God, did you mean to follow him? Like, unfollow him!’ and I went and grabbed my phone like, ‘Oh shoot, oh my God. I went to go on my Instagram app and the second that I opened the app, my phone died.”
First things first: that friend is extremely real for the instant notification. And, secondly, the universe loves to laugh at us sometimes, re: Liv’s phone dying. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
She went on to say that she had been following her ex for a while as she didn’t have a charger nearby, to which Jimmy asked, “Did it get out?” Olivia then explained that her fans thought she had been hacked because of the mistake and that she played along with it.
“I have a Finsta now, so I’m safe,” she reassured the late-night host before explaining that the purpose of the account is to “just lurk and be curious.” Liv then influenced Jimmy to make his own secret account. “I’m totally getting a Finsta this week,” he said.
