Ahead of Jada Pinkett Smith‘s upcoming memoir, Worthy, being published, the actor is revealing multiple details about the private parts of her highly-publicized life. Upon revealing she and Will Smith have been separated since 2016 and Chris Rock asked her out amid divorce rumors, Jada opened up about “being blamed” for the infamous Oscars slap.

In a new interview with People, she admitted it was “ridiculous how far” the aftermath of the viral moment went. “But I also understood at the same time. Considering the false narrative that I had cheated on Will or I was like some adulteress, Will had never done that before,” Jada told the publication. “And I think that when we just look at human nature… when you look at the breadcrumbs, people need something to blame.”

“And so people not knowing what was happening behind the scenes, I surely wasn’t surprised that I got blamed,” she added. “But I understood that that’s just the human nature of it all.”

After Chris made a joke about Jada’s alopecia during the Oscars broadcast, Will walked up to the stage and slapped the comedian in defense of his wife. Jada revealed to People that she assumed the incident was a “skit” that the actors had planned for the awards show.

“I was like, ‘There’s no way that Will hit him,'” she explained. “It wasn’t until Will started to walk back to his chair that I even realized it wasn’t a skit.”

Days after SlapGate ensued, Will was banned from attending Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences events—including the Oscars—for 10 years.
