The Spider-verse’s web is getting a lot bigger! There’s a new super that will be spinning its way to Sony’s ever-growing universe and her name is Madame Web. Whether she will be a hero or a foe remains to be seen, but the character does have a very rich history in the Marvel comics, so it’s not too surprising to see her finally get a movie. But with so many Spidey movies out there and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we can’t help but wonder just how much of a role she’ll actually play in the long run.

Here’s everything you need to know about Madame Web.

Who is Madame Web?

If you’re not that well versed in the Spidey comics, Madame Web is actually a mutant who has the ability of telepathy and clairvoyance. She first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #210 back in November 1980.

Madame Web’s real name is Cassandra Webb, and she’s put on a special life support system that looks like webs after she becomes ill with a neuromuscular disease that leaves her paralyzed and blind. Despite this, she worked as a medium and Peter Parker reached out to her to help out with a missing person report.

Cassandra also has a granddaughter named Charlotte Witter, who later becomes Spider-Woman. She is also connected to Julia Carpenter, who previously was the second Spider-Woman in the comics and later becomes the new Madame Web.

Who is in the cast for Madame Web?

This is where things get really interesting. According to Deadline, Dakota Johnson was the first person to be announced and will be taking on the lead role of Madame Web. There’s still no word on whether she’ll be playing a younger Cassandra or Julia, so details about her character are still up in the air.

Meanwhile, Sydney Sweeney has also been announced as part of the cast, but her role is being kept under wraps, as revealed by Deadline. There’s a good chance she’ll be playing either Cassandra or Julia, but considering the fact that the Spidey-verse has a number of characters who can come into play, some people are thinking she might even play Gwen Stacey/Spider-Gwen or Felicia Hardy/Black Cat. The same goes for Emma Roberts, who was just announced as the latest addition to the ensemble crew. For the actor, this will mark her first Marvel film after recently wrapping production on the upcoming rom-com Maybe I Do, which stars Diane Keaton, Susan Sarandon, and Richard Gere. Booked and busy doesn’t begin to cover it!

What will Madame Web be about?

It’s likely the movie will follow Cassandra’s origin story and show us how she became Madame Web. Whether it’ll be linked to any of the other Spider-Man movies that Sony has in the works still remains to be seen.

When will Madame Web be released?

Filming has yet to begin on the flick, so your guess at a release date is as good as ours. Especially with the upcoming Morbius movie in 2022 and Kraven the Hunter in 2023, the safest bet would be a 2024 or 2025 release date.
