James Corden recently dropped the surprising news that he’ll be leaving The Late Late Show in 2023—which means CBS has less than a year to find a replacement host. Just real quick in case this is brand new information to you, James said he wants to depart the show on a high note and plans to eventually move back to England. As he put, “When I started this journey, it was always going to be just that. It was going to be a journey, an adventure. I never saw it as my final destination, you know? And I never want this show to overstay its welcome in any way. I always want to love making it. And I really think in a year from now that will be a good time to move on and see what else might be out there.”

So, who is going to replace James? Hopefully someone different from the norm! Which is not a dig at James (who has been a great host and fully revamped the Late Late Show format), more just an acknowledgement that the hosts who came before him were Tom Snyder, Craig Kilborn, and Craig Ferguson—three white cisgender men. So yeah, hopefully CBS is casting a wide net when it comes to finding someone to take over for James. No names have been officially dropped yet, but here’s what we know so far.

They’re Considering a “Multi-Host Panel”

Variety reported in early June 2022 that CBS is considering a “multi-host panel.” Apparently, the network thinks this makes the most sense considering many viewers watch clips of the show the next day vs. the night of—and Variety also notes a panel could weave “more diversity into a time period that doesn’t have much of it at present.” Yes please to that!

Meanwhile, CBS CEO George Cheeks told Deadline, “We’re going spend some time figuring out what is the right replacement format, and I don’t believe that we’ll just be putting out another host there I think it’s really looking at the format.”

Sounds promising! So…who do they have their eye on? Variety didn’t name names but did say that CBS has “been approached by representatives of various hopefuls for a hosting gig,” while CBS Entertainment chief Kelly Kahl told Deadline his team has received “quite a few” calls from people who want a foot in the door. So yep, sounds like plenty of celebs’ agents are pushing their clients forward.

Vanessa Hudgens’ Name Has Been Floating Around

I know right? Living for this! A Deuxmoi tipster threw her name into the mix, noting that Vanessa’s been doing a bunch of hosting work lately and killing it—both on the Met Gala red carpet and at the MTV Movie and TV Awards. Vanessa is also an industry vet thanks to her early days as a Disney star, so she pretty much knows everyone.

Fans Are Hoping for Chelsea Handler, Amber Ruffin, or Samantha Bee

Chelsea, Samantha, and Amber all have a ton of experience in this area, and people on Twitter are making their feelings known. That said, they’re all pretty busy doing their own shows/projects right now, so who knows if they’d want this pretty permanent and time-consuming gig.

If CBS goes with a panel format, they’ll presumably have to hire people who aren’t under contract with other networks, but it would be amazing to see Amber, Chelsea, or Samantha show up!
